Tiananmen Square was not always a public gathering place; it used to be the Imperial
Way, a wide boulevard to the Forbidden City, lined with state offices. I am standing
at the southern edge of Tiananmen looking at the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen in
Mandarin), the front gate to the Forbidden City. The portrait of Chairman Mao
looks away from the City and its notions of royalty.
